World Suicide Prevention Day

September 10, 2022

Words matter, especially when it comes to mental health.
The phrase “committed suicide” is an expression that many people still use.
The term “committed suicide” is damaging because for many it evokes associations with ‘committed crime or sin’.
The phrase “committed suicide” also ignores the fact that suicide is often the consequence of an unaddressed illness such as depression and or trauma.

Educating ourselves to use sensitive mental health vernacular is important in changing the negative stereotypes attached to mental illness.
It is time we start looking at suicide as a dangerous by-product of a mental health condition that requires treatment and intensive support from family, friends and professionals.
